Traverse: A WWII Tabletop Wargame of Strategy & Reaction

a new and unique World War 2 tactical combat simulation where your actions and the enemies Reaction’s determine the outcome of the battle

The first edition of our new World War II platoon to company level wargame historic action simulator. TRAVERSE is designed around our central gaming ideal that combat action is about the reaction of troops and units, not casualties or hit rolls!

In TRAVERSE you will command a platoon or company-level force of 1:100 / 15mm scale tanks, vehicles and infantry in a narrative-driven scenario inspired by events in France, 1940.  The first edition of TRAVERSE is firmly set in the early period of the war, 1939-1940 and includes an interesting range of early tanks including the mighty French Char B1 BIS and Somua and the early British cruiser vehicles, as well as the early variants of the famous Panzer I, II, III and IV (albeit with the infamous ‘door knocker’ 37 mm gun!)

Action in TRAVERSE is built around a stepped action sequence, with both sides holding ten action tokens.  These are randomly drawn alternately by the players and the result indicating which type of Unit can move that step – faster vehicles have more tokens, so get more actions while the poor bloody infantry (PBI) slog along behind!

A tank that has been hit has smoke effect bellowing out, whilst a Universal Carrier drives past.

Tank gunnery action is simulated by a shot calculation system where you draw various dice for targeting, deflection and difficulty including if you have targeted an enemy tank already.  Additional rounds of shooting improve your hit chances as the action unfolds dynamically across the battlefield.  Infantry automatically hit a target with suppressing fire, pinning enemies or receive suppressing hits themselves reducing their combat effectiveness – unless they’re in heavy cover of course!

Gunnery versus armoured protection is modelled on extensive historic research using  a simple gun power and armour rating system, but in this time period the German main 37mm gun is badly underpowered while the British 2 pounder gun is the best in the field. Ranges are also modelled at scale, so most guns will always be in range on a standard gaming map table.

TRAVERSE uses a narrative mission system that follows the guiding principle that battles are about control of the ground, which helps you to impose your will upon the enemy.  Map grids provide scored areas, control of which earn mission points showing ground that is the strategic objective and needs to be held.  A platoon action will likely need a 4’ X 4’ table to set up a good game, or a 6’ X 4’ table for a full company-level game.

Tank has smoke effect because it has just been hit in the game.

TRAVERSE is currently in beta testing

full version is anticipated LATER 2025
